Our approach is rooted in the belief that children are natural learners — curious, capable, and full of potential from the very start.
Learning Through Play
At Little Kickers, we follow a play-led approach to early learning. We believe that play is not just what children do — it is how they think, communicate, problem-solve, and make sense of the world around them.
Our practitioners are trained to observe, support, and extend children's learning through carefully planned environments and responsive, in-the-moment interactions. We follow the principles of Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence and the Early Level, alongside the guidance of the Pre-Birth to Three framework.

Play-Led Learning
Children learn most deeply when they are engaged, motivated, and having fun. We plan our environments to spark curiosity and invite children to explore, investigate, and create — following their interests and building on what they already know.
From sensory play and construction to storytelling and small world exploration, every activity is purposefully designed to support development across all areas of learning.
Outdoor Exploration
We believe the outdoors is one of the richest learning environments available to young children. Daily outdoor time — in all weathers — gives children the freedom to move, take risks, connect with nature, and develop resilience.
Our outdoor space is designed to offer open-ended, child-led experiences: digging, climbing, growing, and discovering. We embrace the seasons and use the natural world as a living classroom.
Caring Relationships
Children thrive when they feel safe, loved, and understood. Our key person approach ensures every child has a trusted adult who knows them well — their interests, their needs, and their unique way of learning.
Strong relationships between children, practitioners, and families are at the heart of our practice. We work in close partnership with parents and carers, sharing observations and celebrating milestones together.
Communication & Language
Language is the foundation of all learning. We create a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to talk, listen, ask questions, and express themselves in many different ways.
From singing and storytelling to mark-making and conversation, we support children to develop the communication skills they need to connect with others and engage with the world.
Creativity & Expression
We celebrate children's creativity in all its forms — art, music, movement, drama, and imaginative play. Creative expression helps children process their experiences, develop confidence, and find their own voice.
Our creative areas are stocked with open-ended materials that invite children to experiment, make choices, and take pride in their own unique creations.
Wellbeing & Belonging
A child who feels happy, settled, and secure is a child who is ready to learn. We prioritise emotional wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging for every child in our care.
We use the SHANARRI wellbeing indicators as a framework for understanding and supporting children's holistic development — Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, and Included.
The Outdoors as a Classroom
We believe that outdoor play is not a reward or a break from learning — it is learning. The natural world offers children experiences that simply cannot be replicated indoors: the feel of mud between their fingers, the sound of rain on leaves, the challenge of balancing on a log.
Our outdoor sessions are planned with the same care and intentionality as our indoor provision — with space for child-led discovery, physical challenge, and quiet contemplation alongside the natural world.
Our Curriculum Framework
We are guided by Scotland's national frameworks for early learning and childcare, which place children's wellbeing, relationships, and play at the centre of everything we do.
Curriculum for Excellence — Early Level
Scotland's national curriculum framework, which we follow from birth through to Primary 1. It focuses on developing the whole child across four capacities: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors.
Pre-Birth to Three
National guidance for practitioners working with Scotland's youngest children, emphasising the importance of relationships, responsive care, and the unique nature of each child's development.
Building the Ambition
National practice guidance on early learning and childcare in Scotland, which informs our approach to planning, observation, and creating high-quality learning environments.
Observation & Planning
We observe children closely and use what we see to plan experiences that build on their interests and extend their learning. Families are kept informed and involved through regular updates, learning journals, and open conversations with their child's key person.
